Lots of people have been knocking the mysterious John Beck lately for “mediocre” arm strength.
Beck may not shoot lasers like John Elway, but this play from his college days suggests to me that his arm strength shouldn’t keep him off the field, especially in a West Coast variant offense. He chucks it at least 65 yards in the air, with good rotation and precision—even though it falls incomplete.
Corroborating the clip is the fact that Redskins teammates often complimented his “live ball” last summer after he got into camp.
There’s no question that launching a Bomb and throwing a Quick Out in Tight Man are two completely different things, the latter being a far more important NFL skill. But if John Beck doesn’t pay off for Shanny, I don’t think his arm strength will be to blame.
